Anthony De Bono - Resume'
Ambassador Emeritus Anthony De Bono has had a distinguished career in public service and diplomacy. He served as Malta's Ambassador to Jordan and is currently the Perpetual Ambassador for the Commonwealth Telecommunications Organisation . With 12 years (1971-1983) as Chief of Staff for Maltese government ministers, he played a key role in modernizing national health services and establishing/enhancing diplomatic relations with then Yugoslavia, Czechoslovakia, the PLO, the UK, Kuwait, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Italy, Algeria, Ghana and Jordan. As CEO of Telemalta Corporation for 14 years (1983-97), he led the modernization of Malta's telecommunications infrastructure and Malta was recognized as a role model for telecommunications development, world-wide by the United Nations. Ambassador De Bono has also held leadership roles including Chairperson of the Commonwealth Telecommunications Organisation, the Advisory Board of the UN’s International Telecommunication Union, the Telecommunications Industry Lobby (ETNO) at the European Union and the European Commission for Posts and Telecommunications, as well in various international organizations and has extensive experience in the ICT industry. In 2002, The Government of Malta, under the Premiership of Hon Dr Edward Fenech Adami, presented the candidature of Anthony De Bono for the position of Secretary General of the United Nations’ ITU. DeBono is actively involved in the International business development, sports initiatives and philanthropy ( he was for 20 years (1988-2008) Chairperson of the four Presidents of Malta’s Community Chest Fund Sports Commission – a unique eventuality that can hardly be achieved neither in Malta, nor across the globe. De Bono has been recognized for his international contributions as well as for the economic development of the Nation, Journalism, Philantrophy and Sports in Malta. Notably, in 2007, in Jamaica, Ambassador De Bono was bestowed with the Special Recognition Award by the Commonwealth Telecommunications Council in appreciation for the valuable services rendered in various capacities to the Commonwealth, but it was in 2019, that DeBono reached the apex of his career when he received at the President of Malta’s Palace, the prestigious United Nations award for his extraordinary contributions to the work of the International Telecommunication Union. Additionally, his role as CEO during the Bush-Gorbachev summit in 1989 that led to the end of the cold war, the Queen’s and Pope’s visit to Malta, the organization of the State Funeral of Prime Minister Dr George Borg Oliver, the 1975 Malta-UK Health agreement, benefitting to date 50,000 patients, who received free medical treatment in the UK, his successful lobbying direction by Prime Minister Dom Mintoff to secure Parliament’s approval for Malta to become Republic on 13 December 1974, his successful coordination task to capture the criminals for the theft of the Caravaggio, his successful negotiation at the World Health Organisation to secure the first ever UN’s Institute for the Aged in Malta are significant highlights of his career. Anthony De Bono has served for four years on the Administration and Engineering Faculty Boards of the University of Malta and has over 50 years of leadership experience in the Public Service, the Political and Diplomatic domains and more specifically extensive expertise in the ICT industry.
